Fleet of SUVs launched in SW Virginia to help transport mental health patients

Southwest Virginia is chosen as the first region in the state for a new program that will transport those ordered to receive mental health care under an emergency order.

Officials with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services says the transport of qualifying patients without the use of shackles or handcuffs will provide a better situation for the person and less time off the road for law enforcement officials who can spend dozens on man hours on the road for transport.

The first fleet of vehicles will go into service in the region on Oct. 7.
