Study: Health care costs for Virginia inmates spiked over last decade

A proposed law to be placed in front of the Virginia General Assembly next month would give terminally ill or permanently disabled state prisoners compassionate release.

That legislation could result in savings for the Commonwealth which has paid increased patient care costs over the past decade. A recent study showed inmate health care rose from $140 million to $230 million while 14 percent of the inmate population is age 55 or older.
