UPDATE: Wife in notorious Sullivan County abuse case set for first parole hearing
One of the parents in a notorious child abuse case in Sullivan County is scheduled to have her first parole hearing.
Information from the Tennessee Department of Corrections says Evangeline Combs was to go before a panel at West Tennessee State Penitentiary. Combs, 70, has been housed there since she was sentenced to serve 65 years for aggravated child abuse to their adopted daughter Esther who is now known as Elsa Garcia who prosecutors said was made to live as a servant to the family.
Evidence showed Elsa had been severely abused by her parents—being whipped, beaten, raped, and subjected to several types of torture that left her with more than 400 scars. Her father, a Baptist preacher named Joe Combs, received a 114-year sentence.
