NEW: Human remains recovered from home leveled by blaze in Washington County, Virginia

A death investigation is underway in Washington County, Virginia that Sheriff Blake Andis has called suspicious in nature.

Human remains were found in the debris of a house fire at a dwelling located on Mary’s Chapel Road in Bristol. Firefighters were called to the scene late Saturday and returned when the blaze rekindled early Sunday.

The burned body was not discovered until Monday, the sheriff said, and the home was reportedly vacant and was up for sale.

The remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for an autopsy and to also determine the gender and description of the victim.
