NEW: Kidnapping victim in Jonesborough survives two gunshots, suspect hospitalized

Investigators have charged a Jonesborough man with kidnapping and shooting a female victim.

Rodney Bennett, 58, is charged with attempted first-degree murder and especially aggravated kidnapping following the domestic incident that ended with a car crash on West Jackson Boulevard Tuesday afternoon.

A report from Sheriff Ed Graybeal’s office said eyewitnesses told officers before the crash they saw the female’s legs hanging out of the vehicle as she tried to jump out near Tavern Hill. Investigators said Bennett took the woman from her home and had shot her in the head and neck as she tried to escape.

The victim was listed in stable condition at an area hospital.

Bennett was hospitalized and was issued a $100,000 bond after officers obtained warrants for his arrest.
