US Bureau of Prisons report 19 COVID cases at federal prison in Lee County

Officials at the region’s lone federal prison have 19 individuals being treated for the coronavirus.

Statistics supplied by the US Bureau of Prisons said as of Tuesday nine inmates and 10 workers at the US Penitentiary in Pennington Gap, Virginia are undergoing medical care.

A sister facility in Petersburg, Virginia has reported this week the death of an inmate who had underlying conditions prior to his virus diagnosis last month. More than 1,500 federal inmates are being treated for the illness.
