New Murder Charge Cause to Push Back Kingsport Man's Already Scheduled Murder Trial
New murder charges against John Slemp of Kingsport is cause to push back the trial he's already facing in another killing. Judge James Goodwin is convinced that publicity over new charges is cause for concern about the jury pool planned in May for Slemp's trial for murder. Thus, Goodwin delayed his trial for killing Betty Short until September 21st. In that bludgeoning, authorities say Slemp was a family friend who killed to steal guns and collector knives. Earlier this month, he was also charged in the brutal stabbing of Gary Jones in Colonial Heights which, authorities say, stemmed from his association with the victim and prescription drugs. Authorities also say Slemp is a suspect in the killing of a third person, the stabbing of a 17-year-old on Rock Springs Road.
