Misbranded drugs
A KINGSPORT, TENNESSEE COMPANY IS ACCUSED OF SELLING A DRUG NOT APPROVED BY THE FDA. 53-YEAR-OLD ROBERT HARSHBARGER, JR., A TENNESSEE PHRAMACIST AND OWNER OF AMERICAN INHALATION MEDICATION SPECIALISTS, IS FACING CHARGES THAT HE USED IRON SUCROSE MEDICATION SHIPPED FROM CHINA AND SOLD IT AS VENOFER. THAT IS THE ONLY DRUG OF ITS KIND APPROVED BY THE FDA FOR PRE AND POST DIALYSIS PATIENTS. KANSAS DIALYSIS PAID EIGHT HUNDRED-SEVENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS, AND MEDICARE AND MEDICAID PAID EIGHT HUNDRED-FOURTY-FIVE-THOUSAND FOR THE MISBRANDED MEDICATION. HARSHBARGER FACES UP TO TWENTY YEARS IN PRISON AND LARGE FINES ON EACH OF FIVE COUNTS OF HEALTH CARE FRAUD. HE ALSO FACES CHARGES OF SELLING MISBRANDED DRUGS AND MAIL FRAUD. (CC)
