Mom Abandons Newborn
KIERA DRIVER IS HOME SAFE WITH HER FATHER AFTER BEING ABANDONED BY HER MOTHER AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL. IT HAS BEEN A HARSH WEEK FOR BABY KIERA. LAST WEEK SHE WAS BORN ON INTERSTATE TWENTY-SIX IN A CAR WHILE THE DRIVER WAS ATTEMPTING TO GET HER MOTHER TO FRANKLIN WOODS TO GIVE BIRTH. THE HOSPITAL NOTIFIED THE DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN'S SERVICES THAT SANDY DRIVER LEFT THE HOSPITAL WITHOUT HER CHILD. DCS SAYS THAT THE CHILD HAS BEEN PLACED WITH DRIVER'S HUSBAND DERRICK, WHO CLAIMS HE IS THE FATHER OF KIERA. A HOME INSPECTION HAS BEEN DONE AND DERRICK DRIVER WAS ABLE TO TAKE THE NEWBORN HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL. THERE IS NO REASON TO BELIEVE THAT SANDY DRIVER WILL FACE ANY CHARGES SINCE TENNESSEE LAW ALLOWS THE NEWBORN CHILDREN TO BE LEFT AT SAFE HAVEN LOCATIONS. DERRICK DRIVER WAS NOT IDENTIFIED AS THE FATHER OF KIERA LAST WEEK WHEN SANDY DRIVER AND DESMOND JOHNSON GAVE MEDIA INTERVIEWS ON THE UNUSUAL STORY OF THE BABY'S BIRTH. (cc)
