TOPS - Police Standoff
Bristol, Tennessee police were scrambled to a St. Louis Avenue residence just before 11:00 o'clock last night in response to a hostage situation. James Lane had threatened to kill his wife with a firearm. She was able to lock herself in the bathroom. Hostage negotiators and SWAT team members tried for a couple hours to get Mr. Lane to surrender. He repeatedly refused to come outside. Mrs. Lane was able to escape, and Mr. Lane surrendered a short time later. He was taken to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries he sustained while trying to break into the bathroom. A mental evaluation has been requested. Police have not filed any formal charges at this time. (jb)
