Ramsey Defends Low Taxes
Tennessee Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey is responding to an internet blog critical of Tennessee being the state with the lowest tax burden. Much of the tax Tennessee collects comes from sales tax. Ramsey believes the sales tax levels the playing field--he says even if you are an illegal immigrant, if you buy something, you have to pay tax. And he says it ensures that everyone participates in government. Ramsey also says small government is a goal, not an idea that needs to be defended from liberal attacks, and that George Mason University just came out with a study of the freest states in the nation based on taxes, debt and 2nd amendment rights, and Tennessee was ranked the third. Ramsey says he wants Tennessee to be the best state in the union in which to do business and to be a state with a quality teacher in front of every student, and he believes the Volunteer state is going the right direction.
