Stapleton to Appeal
The man convicted of attempted rape in Sullivan County this week is expected to appeal that jury verdict. A lawyer for Jimmy Joe Stapleton believes a witness to the alleged rape and assault of Christa Hart that did not testify may help his client’s case. That witnesses is Mike Yarborough, Stapleton’s step-father. Several of the accused former friends testified that Stapleton raped Hart and attacked them with a knife when they tried to stop him. One eventually shot Stapleton as the police were being called to the apartment near Tri City Airport. Hart was murdered in an apparently unrelated incident several months after the rape.
